Since the spring of 2022, more that 150,000 migrants have arrived in New York City. This extreme rise in migrants triggered an extreme rise in demand for certain resources, including food and living space. People are coming from all over the world, with a rise in population coming from Venezuela. Venezuela is currently experiencing a record breaking economic decline, leading to this surge of millions trying to escape.
After making it across the Southern border, thousands of migrants are coming up to New York with the help of officials in Texas. Despite New York’s increasing efforts, they are having a hard time keeping up with the people flooding into the city, saying that they have “reached capacity” and discouraging more people from coming. People are sleeping on the streets, and it is estimated that New York will spend about 12 billion dollars in three years trying to keep up in housing and feeding the migrants.
Although helping people in need should always be a priority, there is a point where support physically can no longer be given. New York has poured resources and money into helping to house the migrants, but there is not much left to give. Unless the city is given money from the government to fund continued help, migrants may need to find new cities and locations to seek help and homes. This will allow for New York to create a more stable system, and process the people who are already here who still need help.
