For years, Congress has been divided on the issue of spending in relation to immigration. Both parties seem discontent with the current state of immigration policies in the United States, but are stuck on their own sides. Although it is understandable to stick with a personal belief, the matter at hand seems pressing enough that compromise is necessary, especially with the deadline of the government spending budget approaching quickly on November 17th.
Despite being able to agree that changes need to be made, Congress is unable to agree on how those changes can be made. Both the Democrats and the Republicans are convinced the other side is wrong, making it nearly impossible to find or create a solution for the urgent issue of immigration policy.
The Democrats are currently pushing for concessions as a part of an emergency bill meant to provide aid to Ukraine and Israel. The Republicans are fighting for an overhaul of asylum laws. The Democrats say that they are willing to compromise to get things done, but that the Republicans need to be willing to compromise as well.
Recent polls have shown dissatisfaction with how the Biden administration has handled the recent surge in migrants, and many Democrats fear that if they do not agree to some more modest changes, voter backlash will be major. Congress is losing sight of what they are there to accomplish, which is to make the government as productive and accommodating as possible, especially in a time of need like today. The pressing issue of immigration is being seen as a bargaining chip between the two sides, not as a problem that requires a solution.
