'So Much Suffering:' What Migrant Children Carry to New York

Updated: 1 day ago

As I spoke about in my last post, the influx of migrants coming to New York City has greatly affected how it is being run, and where its money is going. These migrants come seeking asylum from their war and poverty ridden countries, but when they get here, not everything will be perfect. The journey is difficult, and the trauma that these families experienced is not something that they can leave behind.

About 20,000 migrant children are not enrolled in the New York Public schools, and are able to use the resources provided by those schools. However, the city predicts that they are unprepared for the amount of mental health issues that these children carry. They are now living entirely new lives, facing the normal, stressful life in school, while also carrying the baggage that their family brought.

The process of getting to New York was uncertain and stressful for the kids, but also for the parents. Parents can be depressed and anxious, and rightfully so, but this can take away from their ability to give support to the children who are suffering as well. The  New York Public Schools plan on doing their best in assisting the children who need help, but they are not sure of how much they really have the ability to change things, creating an issue. It is now important that New York finds a way to provide these health services to the growing population of migrants.
