As arguments around immigration continue, one question that may be beneficial to focus on is the number of immigrants the United States needs. Former President Trump has spent time strengthening his anti-immigrant rhetoric. In a speech he gave, he said that if he was elected he would enforce, “a deportation level that we haven’t seen in this country in a long time… since the Eisenhower administration”.
With such strong opinions coming from the Republican side, Democrats are scrambling to defend their side as well. However, in this fight between parties, the actual need for immigrants in our country has not been widely considered. Immigrants bring new ideas and resources, and a poll done by the New York Times illustrated how the immigrants are the ones keeping optimism for the American future alive.
We should consider that immigrants can help to reverse the declining population growth in the United States. As the population grows at a slower rate, there are serious implications. With less people, there is less money going into social security, the military loses strength, and the economy begins to suffer. Increased immigrants could begin to fill these gaps. Although it would be ideal for people in power to begin to consider this issue, it does not seem likely that any will begin to drop their positions. However, focusing on this issue could create less of a divide between the parties, and would allow for the most practical solution.
